Today marks the first day of May and guess what? It’s only ten more days until my mom asks me “You know what day it is today?” Here is my list of five blow-ya-mom-out-of-the-water/kickass gift ideas for mom!

You know what my mom loves more than life itself? Her three daughters (and my dog, Mei Mei). When I was a kid, I walked everyday after school to my mom’s work from 3rd to 8th grade. She worked a little over a mile away on the campus of another school as a physical therapist. After my long adventure down the hill to her work, I’d come in and put my backpack at her desk and work on my homework. Top to bottom, her desk was covered in homemade projects I had made throughout the years. There was a picture of a multicolored turkey hand print, a turtle made out of a eggshell carton, random drawings…she had everything. This desk was always a loving place to me and a really special memory because these were my mom’s trophies. She treated them like they were the most precious objects in the world. It made both of us silently proud to look at them.
So this year I encourage all of you guys to think back to elementary school and the first time you painted, glued, or drew something for your mom. Those honestly were some of the best gifts you’ve probably ever given her- they took time, creativity, and love to produce. So my suggestion for this year is go homemade! I scanned through all my favorite craft bloggers to compile a list of simple, meaningful, and useful Mother’s Day gift ideas. Nothing says “I love you mom” better than something you actually made yourself! Now where did I put my hot glue gun…?
– Gift Idea #1: Homey Oh My’s Mini Succulent Garden–
Why This Project? Take it from an irresponsible plant owner, these little guys do not die. All they need is sun to survive (and water every now and again). Another reason to make this project, it’s super easy to do and looks really amazing. Picking out these succulents is way more fun because they are so little and so cute! Mom is gonna totally put this dude on her desk, hands down. If she doesn’t, that little sucker is going in the window somewhere. She will be looking at this little guy being all “It’s growing, just like my kids.” Heck, she might even cry a little. That’s when you know, you’ve made it – you’re the best child in the world.
– Gift Idea #2: Damask Love’s DIY Desktop Tile Planter–
Why This Project? So you made the succulent garden, now what should we put that in? If you’re feeling like going the extra mile, Damask Love’s DIY Tile Planter is one of the most beautiful and simplest ones out there that you make from scratch. She picks a design that is modern and minimalist. Oh you know mom will be showing this one off the the neighbors!
Note: If you don’t feel up to making your own planter, no problem! Save this idea for another day. My suggestion is to put the succulents in a beautiful mug, I love Anthropologie‘s selection as well as Target‘s!
– Gift Idea #3: Make And Tell’s DIY Colorful Brush Strokes Scarf (Featured On Homey Oh My)-
Why This Project? I don’t know about you but my mom is always cold and needing to layer up, so a scarf just makes sense. Fashion gifts can tricky to give because you never know if it’s their style. If you make the design yourself, you don’t have to worry about that. Mom is gonna be all “Those are my favorite colors!” or “Oh baby, did you make this for momma?” Trust me, she’s gonna love it because she will look instant chic. Scarves are a great way to introduce color into a wardrobe without feeling uncomfortable. They easily dress up a plain tee-shirt and jeans (or leggings) and can be worn day to night!
– Gift Idea #4: Almost Makes Perfect’s DIY Guess Who? –
Why This Project? I mean look at this guy. This is not only gonna crack up mom, but you’re going to go down in history as the most clever gift-giver ever. Warning! This tutorial is not for the weak. I would suggest doing it with one other person and bringing drinks and making a day out of it. This project looks like it will take time and patience, but it will also bring years of laughter and is the perfect coffee table piece for kids and adults alike! I already know who is going on my board – something along the lines of Obama, Fan Bingbing, and Voldemort…Dude, I’ma be all, “Does your person have a nose?” Heh. Easy.
– Gift Idea #5: For The Makers’ Evening Grove Sachet –
Why This Project? Who doesn’t like stuff that naturally smells good? This gift is awesome because it looks really impressive and difficult to make – in actuality, it’s not! Mom is gonna be blown away because she will be like, “You didn’t have to buy momma something so nice” and then she won’t believe you when you say you made it…so like that part might not be that good…Anyways this gift is also easily tailored to your mom’s tastes. You get to decide what flowers and the essential oils. By the way, do they have that pizza scented essential oil?
